Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts
- 1.1Project, Program, or Portfolio? Telling PMI's Three Scopes Apart
PMI's entry-level project management certification (2023 Exam Content Outline), covering project management fundamentals and core concepts (project vs. program vs. portfolio, project vs. operations, predictive vs. adaptive approaches, PMI's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, project planning purpose, and project roles and responsibilities), predictive plan-based methodologies (organizational fit, the schedule management plan, critical path method, work breakdown structure, and project controls), agile frameworks and methodologies (when an adaptive approach fits, iteration planning, adaptive project controls, and distinguishing Scrum, Extreme Programming, SAFe, and Kanban), and business analysis frameworks (BA roles, stakeholder communication, requirements gathering, product roadmaps, and validating requirements through delivery). CAPM has no professional-experience requirement -- eligibility requires only a high school diploma, associate degree, or global equivalent, plus 23 contact hours of formal project management education. This self-paced course, with its graded lesson assessments, is designed to count toward that 23-contact-hour requirement; completing it does not by itself grant CAPM eligibility, since PMI reviews and approves every candidate's application directly. PMI does not publish a minimum passing score for the CAPM exam. A standalone certification with no prerequisite exam.
